Sabre and Jordan Ministry of Tourism highlight technology’s role in transforming the travel industry

Embracing technology is key to transforming the travel industry and supporting the growth of Jordan’s economy. This was the topic discussed in depth last week at a media panel hosted by global travel technology company, Sabre Corporation (NASDAQ: SABR).  The event, held under the patronage of H.E. Nayef Al Fayez, Minister of Tourism and Antiques, was attended by travel and tourism industry leaders and media.

H.E. Nayef al Fayez opened the event with his strategy to position Jordan as a global tourism destination and major contributor to Jordan’s economy.  He was joined by panellists from the public and private sector who discussed the role of technology in supporting his strategy, and in meeting the high expectations of today’s travellers.

Daniel Naoumovitch, CEO Sabre Travel Network Middle East (STNME) said the global travel industry is rapidly evolving and that new technologies such as mobile, data and new retailing and personalization strategies could help the Jordan travel industry be a global leader and increase its gross domestic product (GDP) contribution.

“Technology is a great enabler,” said Naoumovitch. “Continued technology investments will ensure the sustained growth and profitability of our thriving and exciting industry, which will benefit the whole country. For travel businesses to succeed in this highly competitive evolving environment, it is vital to integrate new technologies into their roadmap and growth plans. This applies to all players in the travel industry.”

Ahmed Samir, Commercial Director for Levant, Egypt and Iraq, STNME, spoke about travellers’ changing behaviours and how online and mobile technology can often be a key differentiator for travellers when choosing a travel provider.

“Jordan attracts millions of travellers from all over the world and they are increasingly ‘always on’, expecting everything to be delivered online, on their smartphones, and even on wearable devices,” said Samir. “Travel companies need to understand these habits and invest in online and mobile technologies to provide a more connected and personalized travel experience. This is key to driving loyalty, revenue and the sustained success of our local industry,” he added.

Other industry leaders that spoke included Michael Nazzal, CEO of The Federation of Tourism Association and Dr. Abdulrazzaq Arabiyat, Managing Director, Jordan Tourism Board.
