VisitBritain Seminars – GREAT value for travel professionals

Three days, three cities and a wealth of information.  That is what went on this week as VisitBritain, with partners UKVI (UK Visas), Virgin Atlantic and British airways, made a whirlwind trip around the country to educate the travel trade on selling GREAT Britain.

South Africa is a lucrative market for Britain with 217 000 visitors in 2014 and a spend of £230m.  Tourism is an important business sector for the British Government and the British High Commission lent their support to the events with the Deputy High Commissioner Mr Peter Boxer opening proceedings in Johannesburg and High Commissioner Dame Judith MacGregor joining the agents in Cape Town along with a very special guest Baroness Patricia Scotland, outgoing Prime Minister’s Trade Envoy to South Africa, who will soon be taking up the post of Commonwealth Secretary General.

Carol Maddison, Nurture Market Manager, responsible for South Africa, presented a comprehensive array of destinational knowledge, insights, tools and tips to assist travel professionals on how best to sell this sought after destination.

“We are aware that the SA Rand has devalued in past months and that this can create challenges when selling GREAT Britain” said Carol, “but we have ways of offering quality product and services in England, Scotland and Wales that are affordable.  If the agents are aware of these value propositions when offering itineraries then they are better equipped to give the best possible advice to their clients”.

Carol also expressed her gratitude to her colleagues from UKVI for taking the time to present around the country with VisitBritain.   “The prickly issue of visas is important to address, and once agents are armed with the right knowledge and access to correct information. the subject becomes less daunting.  We are really pleased with the interest we have received in all three cities and we look forward to following up with all attendees and to strengthening our relationships further with the South African travel trade”, concluded Carol.

The VB Travel Trade Seminars were held on 09 February in Sandton, on 10 February in Durban and on 11 February in Cape Town.  Attendees were educated on value propositions offering Britain on a budget, encouraged to become experts by completing VisitBritain’s online training course BritAgent, advised to register for the VisitBritain online shop where trade discounts abound and reminded that there is a website dedicated to travel trade professionals.
